Unfortunately, it is becoming more and more difficult to spot sugar on food labels. In fact food manufacturers will often use several sugar names on a label so that “sugar” does not appear to be the main ingredient. Who knew there could be so many names for such a “simple” thing like sugar but here they are, some of the names for natural sugars (view the list of 50 sugar names) :
- Agave nectar
- Barbados Sugar
- Barley
- Beet sugar
- Brown sugar

And the list goes on. The sugar industry is constantly coming up with new ways of naming sugar. Let’s not forget the artificial sweetneres and their numerous names:
- Aspartame (NutraSweet, Equal)
- Saccharin (Sweet’N Low, SugarTwin)
- Acesulfame K (Sunett, Sweet One)

Then there is the natural herbal sugar substitute, Stevia. You are probably beginning to see why so many people are confused about this whole sugar issue.
